The Great Alpha

A. T. Russell, writer, internet talk show host, Great Alpha Speaks 5+ blog interviews, a White Sox, Bears, and Bulls fan, retired Chief after 22 years of active service in U.S. Navy, husband, father and one of his greatest writing joy has come from developing anthologies with other writers. A. T. also was the one who gave me the talk show’s name, THE PLATFORM… well, he said that, “John Rakestraw is the platform!” Well, I’m going to tell you that A. T. is THE REAL RENASCENCE MAN!!!

The Class and Elegance!

Liz Borino, writer, internet talk show host, she earned her BA at Hofstra University in 2010 and is currently pursuing her MA in English. Liz brings an elegance (her effectiveness and added simplicity of style helps to smooth the rough edges of us other two hosts!) I, for one, own a great debt to her… she was my first author interview. She and I had a talk; we had a dialogue. I learned about how she writes, how she got published and I found out about her passion. I found the one element missing from my show… the dialogue! I found my passion while asking someone else about theirs. Five minutes in and I was hooked. I found my calling. Thank you for that gift, Liz!

Writing A Book?
This weeks show… first of all, I’m back and I have A.T. Russell and Liz Borino along for the ride! This new format there will be no schedule guest, we open the phone lines to writer, publisher and readers to talk the craft writing. If they show up great, if not, we’ll throw a topic on the table and just start talking. We can all make this Talk Show work… we just need to get the word out there that two wild guys and one intelligent lady are talking the craft of writing and that we want to hear from the Master themselves… the Writers.
This show we talked about…
- Here is the URL to the interview that A. T. was talking about at the start of the show. Round Table Discussion with Master Writers Talking about Marketing: The Call To Action
- A. T. and I talked marketing and developing relationship with other writers to help build our platforms out there.
- Liz joined us and asked the great question about authors changing genres. But, more to the point… she talked about genres that can cause some writers issue with their possible future employment in a climate of social media and your employer looking up your history and body of written works online.
We then left the LIVE Broadcast and started the recorded part that the listeners have to go to the archives to hear. I liken this to the DVD extras for my shows.
I asked A. T. and Liz…
I posted a statement, “The truth… writing is an art form. Selling your writing is a business! That is the art business that we all need to learn.”
A writer on Google+ commented on this post…
Lara Biyuts – Novelist and poet, essayist and blogger, photographer and her own photo model, digital artist and cat-lover: Lara Biyuts the Silver Thread Spinner. Live & Learn. I learn what I need and share what I know for certain. A voracious reader in the past, I am author of 4 gay-themed novels at present, and my love for literature, like my gender, sexuality and politics, is adamantine. She has a great blog for you to read, http://revueblanche.blogspot.com/ and here are her wonderful books.

“…that is the art business” and work which our agents should know and do
John RakestrawYesterday 1:07 AM
No! You need to do that part also. Don’t just hand over control to someone else! You don’t get to just write and the money flows, you have to market, write and make sure your book is the best product that you can put out there. Your agent, if you have one, is a great partner in YOUR business!
Lara BiyutsYesterday 4:02 AM
Actually, I do all you’ve mentioned, for I have to do it, because I have not an agent. However, the information that my agent is but a “partner in my business” is new to me, and it’s interesting to learn. And yet, as before, I beleive that as a writer, I should only do my creative work, nothing more.
I ask all to give their thoughts on the discussion with Lara. Now, remember everyone has a right to their personal view. We must honor their thoughts, so that our thoughts will also be honored. Don’t make your comments a personal attack towards anyone here.
I had a great time with this first show back on the internet air waves, I hope you did too! Please, tell everyone you know about us. We will be back next week at 11:30 AM (that is West Coast Time, USA) Sunday, May 6th
